That Time of Year: to Clean & Organize

It's almost summer so time to make room for summer clothes. Here are few tips on how to organize and make room for new clothes...you know new stuff from Parallel, maybe?!

Tip 1) Get Rid of Clothes You Don't Wear Anymore:
Organizing your closet is the perfect time to get rid of clothes that you haven't worn in a few years or no longer fit you. Here are few options we recommend when getting rid of your clothes.
  • Consignment Stores: Prefer recognizable brands, what shape the garment is in, is it contemporary, etc. They usually take a percentage of the sale and pay you once the item sells.
  • Give Away/Donate: Why not see if a friend would take any of your old clothes that you don't wear or want anymore. Donating this always a good option since they are plenty of charities that would like your old clothes.
  • Throw Away: Rips, shredding, stains, damaged hardware or zippers, etc just thrown away.

Tip 2) Start Organizing:
Once you have decided what you are going to keep it's time to start organizing.
  • Hanging vs. Folding: Some stylist professionals say if you have room to hang all your clothes is best option because it allows you to see everything and you will wear it more if you can see it. Folding is more of weight and maintaining shape and form issue.
    • Tops/Sweaters should be folded if they are heavy so they don't lose shape on the hanger. When hanging or folding best to color code
    • Jeans can be hung or folded, we think it's best to organize them by color rather than fit.
    • Pants/Skirts hang them using clips and fold the sides so the outside isn't marked by the clips.
    • Dresses can be hung from strapless to long sleeves or by length, day to night, or color. Whichever you prefer and easiest to see.
    • Shoes are best organized by color and style. Put the right shoe toe front and left shoe heel front to see both sides of the shoe.
    • Lingerie should be organize by color and type. "Make sure to rotate your bras and underwear so you're wearing the same few all of the time (Andrea Rapke, founder of The Organized Move)."

Tip 3): Call The In Pros:
If all this is too much or not your thing. Professionals can come in and help you go through your closet, help you decided what to keep and what to throw away, and how to best organize for you. If you live in the Pacific Northwest area we recommend Scarlet Chamberlin

Tip 4) Time To Update And Shop:
Once you are finished with organizing it's time to shop and get yourself ready for a new  wardrobe. What a better place to start than here at ParallelPortland.com.
