Pas de Calais

We are so excited to be the first to carry the Japanese line pas de calais to the Northwest. pas de calais is an area in the northern region of France that the designer is inspired by and loves. Adding nostalgic essence to modern casual design, pas de calais creates a contemporary universe of natural materials. The color tones are also based on soft and natural sober shades: ecru, beige, khaki, white, gray, black etc. Through various techniques from traditional dyeing to highly advanced technology, they transform natural materials such as cotton, linen, silk into original textiles which come together in harmony to compose a extremely comfortable and wearable collection.

Tacoma Art Museum

I recently stayed the night in Tacoma, WA just to get a Korean Body Scrub with
a girlfriend (I highly recommend the Olympus Spa if you ever visit Tacoma).

I fell in love with this quaint college town and was most impressed with
the Tacoma Art Museum. Tacoma is the birthplace of the
glass genius Dale Chihuly and the museum had a special exhibit of his work.
Here are some pics from my visit there.

Here is the Museum mascot at the entrance, Leroy,
which is made out of recycled cardboard and glue.
Behind Leroy is a big bowl where you put donations for the museum.

I've never seen silver done in such a way.
I was amazed with Jewelry designer Flora Book.

If you happen to be in NYC between now and January, this exhibit is a must see. The exhibition Daphne Guinness will feature approximately 100 garments and accessories from Guinness' personal collection, including designs from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaïa, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, and Valentino. Guinness' own designs will also be on display.

Missoni Mayhem

Did you brave the crowds and craziness yesterday for the launch of the new "Missoni for Target" designer collaboration? I have to admit, I knew it was coming and I knew it would be "huge" - but I didn't expect what happened.

I did not attempt to fight through the crowds but lived in the Mayhem through people and media. Customers who can well afford the real Missoni were coming in to the store to show me their finds. It was just a kick for them to buy a pair of Missoni ballet flats for under $30.

The Target website crashed early in the morning - and by the time it finally recovered late last night, almost everything was sold out. Friends were texting and Face booking pictures and wish lists all day long. People were even hitting multiple Target's to score more Missoni.

What do you think of the Missoni for Target collection? I hope you managed to find everything you were looking for. The Target website had more traffic on Tuesday than on Black Friday - they'd be fools not to produce more and replenish. Lots of folks had trouble ordering online and their stores were wiped clean. Reports are that police had to be called in several locations, when actual fights broke out over the merchandise. Hard to believe, huh?

According to a Target representative who appeared on the Today Show this morning, stores will be replenished so check your local stores "often" is what they are suggesting.

They installed a pop-up store last week in Manhattan during Fashion Week. The line to the shop covered six city blocks, and planned to be open for three days. However - in six hours they were completely sold out of merchandise and had to close. Complete and total "Missoni Mayhem"!

I am most excited for this Admiral coat in the grey/camel color blocking. Ordered one for myself!

Colored denim has become increasingly popular with celebs sporting them in all sorts of fun colors like mint green and citrus yellow. I am a little more conservative with colored bottoms but have taken the plunge this season with a solid plum color. The pic above shows the printed version.

We are disappointed that this sweater did not make the final cut but think it is an extremely cool look anyway. However, you will most definitely be pleased with the version that did make the cut. The Baxter Sweater- a tailored black crewneck with detachable leather collar and cuffs.

I just had to share this picture that my girlfriend, Megumi, took while she was in Japan. She is at the Tanabata, the star festival, that usually begins on July 7th. The Japanese celebrate this day by writing wishes on tanzaku (small, colorful pieces of paper) and hanging them on bamboo. The bamboo and decorations are set afloat on a river or burned after the festival. It brought back strong memories of my summers in Japan and how I was really hoping my wish would come true!

My obsession with children's clothing started 7 years ago with the birth of my daughter, Kirra. She normally prefers a more casual approach to her wardrobe but my daughter and I can dream that we are both wearing Lanvin.
Tres chic!

On an adult note: Michelle Obama was seen sporting a pair of Lanvin's chic sneaks in 2009. She was heavily criticized for wearing these as they cost a whopping $540 but I personally applaud her sense of style and confidence. Way to bring the French fashion house to the public eye. I love how she paired the fancy sneaks with a J. Crew Cardigan and capri pants. Splurge on Michelle!

Holiday Buying Trip/Chateau Marmont

Last week I went to LA to view the Holiday/Resort fashions. It was the quickest and most fulfilling trip to date. I caught the first flight in and caught the last flight out. The Holiday season starts in October thru November and the Resort (or Pre-Spring) season spans from December thru January. I love viewing these collections because it allows me to get a feel for what the Spring season will be a like. The funnest appointment was Rag & Bone who rented a villa at the Chateau Marmont. Torie's Cherry Chocolate Chunk Cookes

I made these recently for my dear friend Dina and I had forgotten how fantastic they are! She said it was a 'life-changing' moment for her. Maybe a slight exaggeration but they are really good! The recipe is from a Martha Stewart cookbook that I have had for years. I also make ice cream sandwiches with these in the summer! Enjoy!

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups oats
1 cup dried cherries
4 1/2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 cup toffee pieces

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. In a large bowl, sift together flour and baking soda.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and both sugars on medium speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl once or twice during mixing. Add the egg; mix on high speed to combine. Add the vanilla; mix to combine. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Add flour mixture to egg mixture, and mix on low speed until well combined. Add the oats, cherries, chocolate, and toffee pieces; mix to combine after each addition.
Spoon a heaping tablespoon of dough onto a lined baking sheet. Repeat, spacing 2 inches apart.
Bake cookies until golden brown, 14 to 16 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Store in an airtight container up to 2 days.

The only reason I watch the Oscars are for the fashion. No one was a perfect 10, but quite a few were pretty close. Here are a few who stood out for me:

Amy Adams shined in this gown by L'Wren Scott. My only negative to this would be the necklace. I think she should have worn statement earrings and let the dress stand out on it's own. The necklace that I am not so fond of was the most expensive piece of jewelry worn to the show-$1.35 million to be exact, by Cartier. She was criticized for all the sparkle, but if there is any moment for you to shine, wouldn't it be this one?

Helen Mirren is also dripping in Cartier jewels this evening along with a Vivienne Westwood Couture gown. I just feel like this lady knows how to dress for her body type perfectly. She always looks fantastic to me. 65 years old and still rockin' it! Love!

I have no idea who this guy is, but he looks darn good in a tux!

I just adore Halle Berry as she usually nails her formal gowns, but this one I'm having some mixed feelings about. This crystal encrusted Marchesa gown is so beautiful on the top half, but the bottom half seems somewhat of an afterthought. So close.....

I thought this Calvin Klein dress was stunning. The deep plunging needlepoint neckline and the slim body hugging dress is perfect on Gwyneth. Minimalist perfection!

It is so hard to look good when you have this huge bowling ball in front of you(trust me, I know, I've been there!). But Natalie Portman does an amazing job of making herself not even look pregnant in a floor sweeping dress by Rodarte. Gorgeous deep purple color, jeweled wide off the shoulder V neckline and delicate purple bead fringe earrings by Tiffany & Co.

I thought they were the best looking couple of the night!

Mila Kunis is lovely in this lilac Elie Saab dress. Dress has a very deep scoop neckline accented with bits of lace on the bosom and the tiered lace that cascades down her body. The higher waistline works perfectly with her straight hips, making her legs seem longer. Her confidence and attitude along with the dress doesn't hurt either!

New Balance Spring Summer 2011 Pro Court Series

Okay, I know this isn't a post you would expect from me. But when I am not wearing high heeled boots, ballet flats, or gladiators, I do love to wear sneakers. I've always been a fan of New Balance's sneaks and was excited to come across a peek at their latest addition.

The Pro Court Series for spring/summer 2011 New Balance brings a retro-basketball feel to running sneakers. The black and brown hi-top shoes feature a high quality leather upper, the white and grey versions come with a canvas upper. All five models are set to release in January and February 2011.

I'm assuming these are for men, but I think the camel colored ones would be pretty sweet on a gal as well.

My Visit to Prairie Undergound

It didn't seem right to take a trip to Seattle and not meet the creative duo behind the organic clothing line Prairie Underground. My sales rep made the arrangements and I headed to their industrial warehouse space, family in tow.

Camilla is head of production and Davora is head of marketing. Together they create beautiful functional clothes. All of their pieces are machine washable, even this summer’s Savoy Pant which is a silk hemp blend. They do not like to focus so much on the organic aspect but like to think of themselves as a sustainable and conscious company. I think we can all appreciate that.

I happened to be there as they were starting to ship out their Fall goods and got to understand the process from design to final production. It was great to hear Davora talk about their humble beginnings. They started out in a tiny 400 sq ft space. Their current location seems to be about 2000 sq ft and they are expanding to the space next door.

It is so nice to see two fantastic, talented, and eco-conscious women who started out with small aspirations grow into the empire they are now.

My Fall goods were ready as well so I suggested that I take them with me instead of having them shipped. I just took my goods out of the box, returned the box to her to reuse, felt good about minimizing my carbon footprint, and headed south back to Portland.

I found these dyed shoe laces they used for their color palette interesting. I forgot to ask them why they use shoe laces, but will have to ask them next time. Nonetheless it's a great visual!

Fall goods ready to be boxed and shipped to its destination. I was pretty much in Prairie heaven at this point and if no one was looking I wanted to dive in~!

These are bundles of the famous Long Cloak Hoodies before they are sent to the dye house. Most designers sew after the fabric is the color desired but since this style is one of their staples season after season, it is smart of them to have the pattern on stock and dye it depending on the color the store chooses. You can tell by the zipper of each bundle, what color they were ending up to be.
